Behind the Notes
Theo Mario has been singing for as long as he can remember. Even before he understood the lyrics, he could effortlessly mimic nearly every song he heard. Growing up in a home filled with musical instruments, he was surrounded by music from an early age. At nine, his father taught him four chords on the ukulele, unlocking his ability to accompany himself and perform complete songs. Inspired by Bruno Mars, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Gavin DeGraw, Theo quickly developed a distinctive style anchored by a remarkably agile voice, known for its seamless transition between chest voice and head voice.
At 11, Theo discovered busking after watching his younger brother earn $60 in just 20 minutes playing two simple chords at an Oregon Fourth of July celebration. Inspired, Theo and his siblings formed the College Fund Street Band, performing at street fairs, farmers markets, festivals, weddings, and corporate events for the next six years. Along the way, Theo won talent competitions, starred in musicals, and developed a stage presence that could stop passersby in their tracks.
Theo later attended California State University San San Diego, where he earned a B.A. in Economics in 2023. During college, he fronted the funk band Supercool and served as musical director of one of the university's a cappella groups.
Soulful Songwriting
As a songwriter, Theo gravitates toward emotional ambiguity rather than tidy resolutions. His lyrics often begin with familiar relationship stories but gain depth through vivid, unexpected imagery—"standing in the grave of our passions," "lay flowers by the stone," and "your shadow in the dark is not quite like you at all" transform heartbreak into something cinematic. In other songs, his writing becomes more impressionistic, favoring streams of consciousness, layered metaphors, and fragmented thoughts over straightforward narratives. This style rewards repeated listening, revealing new meanings with each pass.
